Norma Jean: Redeemer

By Robert Fayette

Norma Jean

Coming off a successful stint on Ozzfest, Norma Jean return to the club scene in the inaugural Radio Rebellion tour. The Atlanta, GA five-piece prove why they are currently one of the top bands out today. With an elaborate stage and light show in addition to a second drummer, it is clear why this tour is not one to miss. Prior to tonight's show, I sat down with guitarist Scottie Henry to discuss their new album Redeemer, what it was like to work with legendary producer Ross Robinson and even managed to find out why all the sets were moved up that night.

Scottie Henry • guitar
Chris Day • guitar
Cory Brandan • vocals
Daniel Davison • drums
Jake Schultz • bass

Shoutweb: Who are you and what do you do in the band?

Scottie: I’m Scottie and I play guitar

Shoutweb: How would you describe yourselves to someone who has never heard you?

Scottie: Um, like me or the band?

Shoutweb: The band in general

Scottie: Oh okay. Say never heard us? How old are they?

Shoutweb: I’d say maybe freshman in high school. A kid that’s used to MTV and doesn’t know the hardcore scene that well

Scottie: I’d say Slipknot mixed with like Pink Floyd, maybe somewhere in there. I’d kind of go that way.

Shoutweb: Redeemer, your new album has been in store now about two months? How is it different from O’ God The Aftermath?

Scottie: Um, we put different songs on this one then that one. Their kind of less technical and more straight forward. We’re more heavier because of that. I’d say that’s the main difference.

Shoutweb: How were you able to end up on the Masters Of Horror Soundtrack? Did they ask you to do that?

Scottie: I don’t really know what happened with that. Maybe it was a management thing or something, I don’t remember. It was a cool experience getting together to record that song with Matt Bayless and being able to work with him again. It was cool getting to do that.

Shoutweb: How was it working with Ross Robinson? Was there a different approach to the writing compared to before?

Scottie: Writing wise we really didn’t do anything differently but it was definitely different in the studio. It was more about the feelings of the songs and what was behind them. More in depth about what we were feeling when we wrote them instead of being just hooked up to a tuner and just playing everything perfect. It was more of a live feel to it I guess.

Shoutweb: How did the writing process go, did you use Pro Tools beforehand?

Scottie: No, we have a boom box that our drummer has had since he was a kid that we kind of just set it in the middle of the room and put a shirt over it, then record.

Shoutweb: You guy have been on the road now for about a month headlining the inaugural Radio Rebellion Tour? How has it been so far and what reactions have you had from the kids?

Scottie: It’s been awesome and the kids have been great. This show is actually kind of scaring me, it’s kind of weird, and not that many kids are here. It will probably fill up I guess as it gets later. It’s kind of scary because all the sets got moved up today too which makes it an earlier show. Fear Before The March Of Flames singer got hurt. The bass hit him in the face last night and a tuning key went through leaving a hole in his cheek. They definitely aren’t playing tonight so it moves the whole show up.

Shoutweb: How has it been playing indoors with your own light show compared to playing outdoors in the middle of the day?

Scottie: It’s the worst thing ever trying to play a show in the middle of the day outside. In a venue that big it’s just a completely different feeling. It’s so great to be back in clubs a 100%

Shoutweb: How was being on a non-rotating slot this past summer at Ozzfest?

Scottie: It was great. We were stoked when they asked us and it was really cool with everyone that put it on was awesome. It was a fun time.

Shoutweb: Were there any certain bands that you wanted to see?

Scottie: It’s weird because the bands that we wanted to see the most that we were already friends with were on the same stage as us. It was real cool watching Ozzy, I always enjoyed him.

Shoutweb: What bands are you currently listening to on the bus?

Scottie: I listen to all kinds of different stuff. Tool, Lucero, A Life Once Lost, Pink Floyd and Slipknot, just all different types of stuff. I just got the new Deftones record and like it a lot.

Shoutweb: What can fans expect from you for the rest of the year into the beginning of next year?

Scottie: This tour ends December 2nd and then we’re taking the rest of December off. We’re then heading to Europe in January and then after that I’m not sure what’s up.

Shoutweb: Anything else you would like to add?

Scottie: Get to shows earlier L.A. kids. There are good bands playing.
